Hate to bug you again Ken, but can you answer one more question for me? Is the St. John's Cemetery close enough to the Lady of Mount Carmel Church and cemetery that it's possible my aunt would be confused as to where their grandfather was buried -...

Thanks very much Ken for responding to my querrie. I am now wondering, as you suggest if Giuseppe Lanza could be buried in St. Johns - rather than in the cemetery next to our Lady of Mt Carmel Church. I find it hard to imagine that a tombstone cou...

Ultimo Giorno di un Sogno

The "last day of a dream" has arrived for the six of us. So it is that I am sure we all awoke that Friday morning with a feeling of melancholy, knowing how lucky we all were to have realized a dream come true, but at the same time feeling regret that it is all too soon coming to a close.

We are no… Continue - Continui

Lynda, Thanks for the birthday wishes. Maybe I am a little slower, and a little heavier, and a little more forgetful, but I don't feel any older. Of course maybe I don't reason as well anymore either. -- Ken

Hi Lynda and Craig,
I thank you very much on behalf of Dom. He was quite surprised at all the birthday wishes he received today via the computer - "more mail for me!" he would say. :-) Hope all continues to be well with you both and your families. Bibianna was up today and said to say "hello". Warmest regards, Aileen!

Thanks for letting me know about Cesare's comment about the fountain. It is interesting to know that women were still washing clothes there in the 60s. When I commented on your fountain photo, I said the one today looks just like the one in my photo - actually my memory really failed me! I looked at my photos from 2006 and Cesare's and certainly the fountain looks different today. I remember now that it was the setting that made us so sure it was the same as the one in the photo. I also remember that we noticed the "restored in 1937 (in Italian of course)" on the fountain as further proof that it was the same fountain just looking a little different. I love getting all these bits of information about life in Roseto Valfortore - and I still keep hoping that someone will recognize some of the people in my photos. My husband and I are off to the South Pacific tomorrow morning. I look forward to continuing this conversation when I return at the end of August.

Hi,
Yes we agree that Enid and Marco have put on some fabulous photos as well as yourself. JoAnne King did as well. Cesare continues to be a great help to everyone. Our weather has been humid as well so can relate to that - comes with the heat. Had a quick thunderstorm blow through late last night but not enough rain accompanied it to do our grass, flowers etc. any good. But it did get us out of the pool. I am sure the neighbors were glad for that. :-)
Ciao, Dom and Aileen

Hi Lynda,
We have only had brief moments to look at the photos put on by you and others and we hope to show them to Bibiana on Sunday. The fountain, washing the clothes, baking the bread are all things familiar to us as Bibiana has mentioned them often in her relating stories to us about life in Roseto. We'll see if she can identify any folks in any pictures put on the site but unfortunately most are so small that it might be difficult for her. Anyway we will give it a shot.
Having great weather last several weeks so spending most of our time with friends and relatives poolside - have to take advantage of it while we can.
As always, warmest regards, Dom and Aileen

Yes Linda! The were still washing the clothes at the fountain in the 60's. The fountain was restored in 1937 and then again around 1995. In the old picture you can see a stone that is in a shape of a watermelon. That is the titolo (meaning the boundries of the property) That is why they call it "A fontana del Titolo"...that is also how the road got it's name. That is the fountain that I have a picture of on my page, where I am sitting. I also remember when I was a kid in the 1960's, the owner of the bakery used to go door-to-door to advise the people who were going to bake their bread that day to start kneeding the dough. This was about 4 o'clock in the morning (it takes 3-4 hours for the dough to be ready) Saluti Cesare

I'm glad you enjoyed my photos. Thanks for your comments. It's interesting that the women were still washing at the fountain in the 30s. I think my photo was probably from 1921 because of the graffitti on the walls which Don Michele said was for a politician who ran for office in 1914. My grandfather's last trip to Roseto Valfortore in 1912, but my grandmother went in 1921. My brother, my son and I had a great time with these photos when we were in Roseto Valfortore in 2006. Word got around town that we had interesting old photos and people asked to see them. My brother has a big beard which no one in town has and which frightened some people the first day we were there, but they knew that the man with the big beard had the photos. I wish I could identify the people in the photos especially the groups. I don't remember ever talking about the pictures with my grandmother. My grandmother talked a lot about family history, but now that I'm more serious about my family history I have so many more questions.
